Year 9 Diocesan School for Girls' in Epsom are doing the Horizon Project and our technology is Grassroots Video!
Grassroots video is a way of sharing information and entertainment, opinions and experiences through a web based site like Google video or Youtube. On these sites you can share videos with anyone in the world. You can also watch practically anything you please and anyone with internet access can view and share them.
Grassroots is fast becoming mainstream and many people already use "Grassroots" in everyday life for things like entertainment and using it to catch up on current events. Also for learning about anything you want. For example.. "how to learn guitar"
Grassroots is starting to have a large impact on students and education and teachers are using this technology more often to teach. This is benificial for visual learners. It can also be used for learners who don't completely understand a concept so these students can look for answers on Grassroots sites like Youtube. Grassroots can also be accesed from ipods or cell phones. Grassroots video gives people the chance to express there ideas and make it viewed all over the world.
Short History of Cycling
Cycling has been around for hundreds of years now, more recently competitive road cycling has been introduced, the first cycling race recorded was in 1868. The first Tour de France was held in 1903, with only 6 participants, but after the rules being changed it attracted another 60 participants, in our days there are usually 20 to 22 teams of nine riders.
Cycling
Cycling is a growing sport that has alot to do with the growing technology of grassroots. It relates to this because by watching grassroots cyclists can improve their skills, watch clips on pilaties to make their core stronger, look for ideas on how to train harder and to improve techcnique before they actually hit the road. Cycling can connect to grassroots in quite a few ways, to name a few, To catch up on what is happening with races, to find new training techniques, to look for inspiration, to watch pilates videos to make their core stronger, and many more.
Below is an example of Grassroots being used to show people what is happening in the tour de france, It is being used to update their knowlage on what is happening
Below is another example of another way to use grassroots for cycling- use it for new training techniques
Cycling fits in with the news about cycling races- Current events and happenings around the world to do with cycling
TOUR DE FRANCE
This links to social studiesbecause it is part of the current events
Tour de France is a bicycle race that more then 3500km long! It is held in France and normally lasts around 23 days and people from all over the world take part. The race is broken up into day long segments and the individual times for finishing each race gets added together at the end and the cyclist with the shortest time wins. The course is changed every year but it always ends in Paris. The first race was held in 1903 and the cyclist with the most wins is Lance Armstrong who has won it 7 times. This is the biggest event for cyclists so it would appear in the news and we'd be likely to cover it in class.
Physical Education
CYCLISTS DIET
The cyclists diet is a big part of the subject P.E because in P.E we are advsed to eat well and keep healthy which is exactly what cyclists must do to keep in shape and keep fit and strong to be able to race.
Cyclists need 6000 calories a day! It's not possible to consume that many calories in just three meals a day. So constant snacking is common, high in carbohydrates foods are recommended. Replacment "Gu" has lots of protein and helps to keep their energy output.
It also is linked to Physical Education by fitness, cycling makes you extremely fit if you are comitited
Religious Education
Religious Education is connects to cycling through the morals of the DRUG TAKING that unfortunatley can be involved with cycling, it has become a big issue as more and more people are using drugs to make them faster even though it is illegal and not fair on other riders. Now cyclist that are doping get a four year ban from the sport if they are found. Religious studies also has to do with cycling through coping with success, coping with failure, drugs, morals failure. With the cyclists training so hard for the races it can be hard emotionally when they fail, and God and religious belief can link to this to help them get through it.
Science
Science is a big part of cycling because cyclists need to use science to figure out hwo much nutrition they need to take in to put out maximum amounts of energy, they also need science for medicine and things like antiflame, for their muscles so they can recover from injuries! They also need
Science teachers can also use grassroots to teach alot of lessons, Science can be far more interesting if its on a screen and is interactive rather then listning to a teacher lecture. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kFWtZYioAQ - this is an example of a science lesson that is on grassroots!
Music
listening to ipod while cycling
can be dangerous if you are cycling on busy roads because you might not hear the cars arouind the corner and you'll run into them. Also, wearing a helmut, sunglasses PLUS the earbuds is uncomfortable and if you go fast its hard to hear the music over the sound of the wind rushing past
Music can be benificial to listen to whilst training on a stationary wind trainer different tempos and beats in the song might actually make you go faster. In one survey that has been conducted, there were two groups of people, one group worked out to fast music and the others worked out to slow music. In the end, the group who listened to the fast music burned more calories over all.
Technology
materials used in bikes, carbon fiber
The frame of the bicycle is the most important part of the bicycle because the wheels and other components are fitted onto it. Titanium and steel are the strongest metals for a bike to be made of, but aluminum is also used but it may need to be replaced in three to five years. Carbon fibers started to be used in the 1900's and these were even lighter and stronger bikes. This is how cycling links to technology, as new materials are discovered or invented the lighter, more durable and stronger bicycles get.
English
pep talks, communicating between cyclists
There are laws and rules that cyclists must follow. Under road rules, a bicycle is defined as a vehicle and many road rules that drivers have to follow cyclists have to follow too, such as the traffic lights, stop and give way signs and indicating what direction they are changing to.There are also rules special for cyclists and they include wearing a helmut and having a light on your bike. Before proper cycling races coaches will give pep talks to the competing cyclists to encourage them.
Art
Art links to cycling through paintings of the riders, or close up views or sketches of the races, also it could be the design of the team clothing, they have different logos and these need to be designed by design artists.
Alot of art can also be photography, and this ties in with cycling with creative photography, it can be of the relflection of the spokes on the wet ground, or of the riders faces of agony at the end of their races, or like the photo below.
Junior/Primary
Cycling through Grassroots is connected to Primary schools and younger kids for a few reasons, In primary schools thay often promote exersize and encourage kids to get outside and pushplay, and they can do this by cycling! ..the teachers may use video clips to emphasize how much fun it can be. another way that it is used is that often Kids follow the news and when big cycling crashes occur they can find out about them, they can also follow what is happening in big races like tour de france, or whats happening in the olympics with cycling
Here is a link that gives you a good idea how cycling can help primary school kids- http://www.bikeforall.net/content/teachers.php
Middle/ High School
Grassroots video is being used a great deal in secondary schooling, many subject teachers are using the videos in every day lesson to enhance the learning of visual learners. Cycling and grassroots are involved alot with education at this age, as this is when students begin to investigate this at a closer level so grassroots can help them do this, this is also when teenagers often become lazy so taking up cycling would make them fit and healthy. It is aso a good way for people of this age group to get to know other students throughout the school that they would not normally have the chance to meet. Cyclist or students can use grassroots to find out events that they can participate in our training programs.
